Humble before God’s Power

Luke 1: 39-56

Cole Williams ’19

I like to imagine John leaping. As an unborn child in hismother’s womb, John stirs with joy as his friend andsavior comes near. Even before they were born, John and Jesus already had a beautiful and earth shaping relationship. Elizabeth feels John’s movements and knowsthat the Lord is present in Mary even before she is told that she is pregnant. Elizabeth calls Mary and the Son of Man that is now growing in her blessed. Mary goes on to say that “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for They have been mindful of the humble state of their servant.”

I interpret Mary’s words to hold true for all of God’s children. We are all blessed by God’s unfailing mercy which brings us great gifts. It allows us to stand tall in the face of tyrants, brings relief to the needy, and lifts up the humble. We are all blessed by the many gifts God brings and for that we must be humble in the face of God’s great power.
