Duke University's Men's Rowing Team, founded in 1978.


William Scherba – Head Coach
William began rowing as a freshmen at Junipero Serra High School in San Mateo, California in the fall of 2004. During his tenure he was awarded the Novice MVP in 2005 , the Varsity MVP in 2008, medaled in multiple events at the Southwest Regional Junior Championships, raced in the Head of the Charles and competed in the 2006 and 2008 the USRowing Junior National Championships in the lightweight (LWT) 8. William spent the summer of 2007 rowing for Penn Athletic Club in Philadelphia, PA. That summer he raced in the Club LWT 8 finishing 2nd at the USRowing Club National Championships and the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta. As a rower at the University of California, San Diego, William raced at the 2009 Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championships in the Novice 8, which marked the first appearance at the National Championships in program history. As a freshman, he was named Novice MVP. In 2010 William won the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Championships (WIRA) in the JV 8. Five years ago, he helped start the program at DePaul University, where they went from a squad of 4 boys to a co-educational program with over 50 members, who entered 5 eights at the ACRA Nation Championship in 2017. He is currently enrolled as a student in Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business.


Billy Gerhard and Ben Fong – Novice Coaches
Billy Gerhard (left) is from Charlotte, North Carolina. He is currently a PhD student at Pratt in Environmental Engineering. He previously rowed for the University of North Carolina where the team results at ACRAs improved each year during his undergraduate.

Ben Fong (right) is a native of Newton, Massachusetts. During undergrad, he rowed for the University of Toronto and the Don Rowing Club in Ontario, Canada. He is currently pursuing an MBA at the Fuqua School of Business after six years of service in the US Navy.

    You may be looking for the Duke Women’s Rowing Team – we don’t actually race those colleges in our league.
