In Carnatic music, there are inequalities that exists both among performers and those who make instruments. The most visible problem is the inequality among performers, as the majority of performers are men. These days, there are more women who also perform, but usually only as main artists and not as accompanists. The more unknown inequality exists for instrument makers. They tend to be people from marginalized communities or lower castes, and some percussion instruments use the skin of a cow. In Hinduism, cows are sacred, and so some Hindu nationalists began to fight against the instrument makers for using cow skin. However, at the same time, many artists only prefer instruments using the cow skin and not other alternatives, so this places an unfair dilemma on instrument makers.
