The caste system makes a big impact on the resources for health care people receive. The caste of a person has a direct correlation with how long they wait for health care. There are many reasons for high wait time such as medical staff shortage, increased demand, but this causes inequality across groups due to some groups paying staff for extra treatment.
From an article, I learned that Neha in an HRW interview said that there are “no masks, no gloves, nothing that prevents disease when excrement comes in contact with our hands and legs.” Unfortunately, Dalits do not get much legal protection either and have not been given the essential vaccines to prevent the disease from the excrement. Even today, Dalits face social discrimination and the determinants of health are social and economic as well– not just medical.
