EVENT PLAN FOR NEXT SEMESTER AND EXEC BOARD POSITION OPENS

Hi Duke!
As the year closes and we prepare for next year, the Duke branch of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) will be going through a renovation of sorts. Here’s the breakdown for next year:
Annual events: Instead of organizing a series of events throughout the year, we will focus on improving our few “signature events.” These are the Lab Techniques Workshop, in which we rent out a biology teaching lab and fellow students teach basic lab techniques, and the Publication Information Session, in which a panel of editors from undergraduate magazines and graduate students will answer questions about how to get published as an undergraduate.
We will also introduce monthly Faculty dinners, funded by Duke and usually with Duke faculty but occasionally with guest speakers from other universities.
Also new is the Presentation Support Group, which will take the place of Journal Club and be open on a rolling basis to any undergraduates looking to practice a powerpoint or poster presentation and for extra pointers.
If these events sound interesting or you have ideas of your own, consider applying for one of our open exec positions! Here they are with their descriptions:
  1. Treasurer: Handles money, submits the annual budget, requests the SOFC hearings and submits reimbursement forms as needed.
  2. Technology and Marketing Chief: Keeps the website updated and creates flyers to help advertise for events, along with other miscellaneous marketing tasks.
All exec members are also expected to attend monthly exec meetings. If interested, email me (anna.li@duke.edu) by this Friday (4/8) and we will set up a casual in-person interview.
P.S. If you’d like to be more active and join the exec board but aren’t interested in these positions, contact me anyways and we can figure something out!
