AMWA’s First GBM!

Hey everyone! If you are a pre-health student, consider joining the American Medical Women’s Association this semester! AMWA is a student organization at Duke that can help connect you to mentorship, research, volunteering, shadowing, advising, and network opportunities.

To kick off the year, we’ll be having our first general body meeting of Fall 2022 this upcoming Sunday, Sept. 11, 3-4pm in Physics 128. We will have Insomnia cookies for everyone!

Premed Summer Opportunities

SUMMER 2021 OPPORTUNITIES: 

  • NEW DUKE HEALTH NON-CLINICAL VACCINATION CLINIC VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Duke Health is currently only onboarding college student volunteers who will be able to volunteer over the summer months (May to August 2021) to work in our vaccination clinics. If you are only available starting in the Fall, please do not fill out an application at this time. Duties may include guiding patients to clinic stations, taking temperatures, answering questions, and additional duties according to clinic needs; see position description for details and application instructions.

 

  • NEW VIRTUAL VOLUNTEER INTERNSHIPS WITH THE LAY MENTAL HEALTH ADVOCATES (LMHA) PROGRAM: The LMHA Program is aimed at decreasing mental health disparities for minority populations by training laypersons and future healthcare workers on mental health advocacy through the lens of understanding the role that social determinants of health and systematic racism play in mental health maintenance and access. After completing training, advocates are connected to advocacy missions in their communities. The Lay Mental Health Advocates Program has multiple virtual volunteer internship opportunities available this summer; see position descriptions for more info.   • NEW PALS SUMMER 2021 OPPORTUNITIES: Our volunteer-led PALS programs change attitudes, transform lives, and inspire a world of belonging for individuals with Down syndrome. This summer, we are fortunate to be in a pivotal position to host a variety of in-person and virtual programs, and we are in need of more passionate and welcoming young adults to join us in our mission for young adults with and without Down syndrome.   • EMERGENCY DATA RELIEF INTERN FOR THE COVID-19 DATA PROJECT: If you have been wondering how you can invest your interests in population health and epidemiology data related to the COVID-19 pandemic, consider becoming an intern for The COVID-19 Data Project. The project is organized by a dedicated, volunteer team of statisticians, physicians, and software engineers and currently looking for interns. BroadStreet, a data and software company for social good, backs and supports the project. See COVID-19 Data Project webpage for more details and application instructions.

 

Duke Children’s Virtual Reading Project

We are working with Duke Children’s to compile a virtual reading library for pediatric patients!
