About Us!

Adopt-a-Grandparent (AAG) is a student organization at Duke University chartered on August 20, 2000 by the Student Organization Finance Committee (SOFC) of Duke Student Government.

Mission Statement

The mission of AAG is to provide disabled and institutionalized senior citizens with social and emotional support, to foster the formation of positive social relationships between senior citizens and Duke students, and to encourage understanding and appreciation of the senior citizens in our community, especially those who lack social support and financial resources.

Volunteering

We volunteer every Saturday at Durham Nursing & Rehabilitation Center (DNRC), formerly known as Grace’s Healthcare, which is located on 411 South LaSalle Street, Durham, NC 27705. Students carpool or Uber to DNRC and may choose to spend one-on-one time with residents and/or partake in group activities such as arts and crafts, baking, student performances, or a crowd-favorite, BINGO.

Adopt-a-Grandparent has a faculty sponsor, Dr. Deborah Gold, who teaches service-learning courses in the Sociology department. AAG is one of the sites offered to the students to fulfill their service-learning requirement for all of her courses.
