Title: Digitization Specialist
Library/Department: Rubenstein Library, Digital Collections Services
Location: West Campus
Years at Duke: A little over 3 years
In a nutshell, what do you do at Duke University Libraries?
I work in the Digital Production Center alongside 3 other digitzation specialists and we work to create digital surrogates of special collections material for preservation and access. From tomes to tiny, 35mm photographic negatives, the DPC is poised to capture it all for patrons and digital collections.
If you had to pick one thing, what’s the best part of your job so far?
I appreciate so much about this role and this place. But, just one thing? The trust shared between me and my colleagues stands out: trust in their organization, attention to detail, and accuracy. Selfishly, it makes my job easier! Who doesn’t want that?
What is the best thing you’ve read/watched/listened to recently?
Listening to music helps me focus a lot of the time. The new Kendrick Lamar album is just about perfect, as well as the latest records from Sturgill Simpson and Chat Pile. I was introduced to the writer Karl Ove Knausgaard by way of his book/lecture “Inadvertent” — highly recommended not just for writers, but all makers and creatives!
What do you like most about living in The Triangle?
I appreciate engaging with art and artists in the Triangle. From film screenings to meetups about photography books, there’s always something cool happening it seems and it’s only growing.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I really value time with my family: my wife and 5-year-old daughter. We love exploring new parks and trails in the area (well, when it warms up a little!). I’m also a practicing artist.
