The Harlem Renaissance was an era of creative revolution or African American audiences and publics.  The arts took on a new importance in literary, musical, theatrical, visual arts, and dance experiences offered in Harlem and in other Northern US cities.

While imagery of African Americans in an ‘endless party’ persisted, Harlemites were very involved in the struggle for civil rights that affected all Americans.
