This has more to do with office practice rather than direct clinical teaching. We all multi-task- this was an attempt to look at how this works amongst 1275 providers with a mean of 9 years of experience. Most providers spend a mean of 64 minutes per workday completing inbox work. On an average workday, a provider had 79 attention switches defined as completing one inbox task and starting another.  It is presumed that attention switching causes cognitive burden and may be associated with errors. A conclusion was that assisting PCPs with message quantity might help reduce attention switching and also the duration of daily inbox work.
