Love of LearningWhy do Jews so often answer a question with a question? Who said life offers easy answers? In Jewish tradition, Jews strive to understand God’s commandments through study. One question leads to another in a lifelong, personal search for meaning. Since Judaism is as much a way of life as a faith, Jews apply this tradition of questioning to secular life, too, contributing to extraordinary success in education and scholarship. In North Carolina, Jewish children succeeded in the public schools, and the state’s universities opened their doors when Northern schools closed theirs. That said, the road to learning has not always been smooth for North Carolina Jews. Sometimes they faced outright prejudice in their efforts to gain access to education.
