Exhibit: Flora and Feminists – Explore a New Dimension of Botany

Venue: HUM Space (AB 1075A)

Dates: 12th September – 7th October

Step into the world of women and plants! From 12th September to 7th October, explore Flora and Feminists – The Subversive Science of Botany at HUM Space  (AB 1075A) and discover the hidden, powerful stories where plants and women intersect.

Historically, botany was considered a safe field for women, yet women’s knowledge and use of plants for birth control, childbirth, and healing reveal a rich legacy of autonomy and creativity—sometimes even challenging patriarchal norms.

Through three progressive themes, it invites you to explore the female perspective of botany:

1. Birth Control and Abortion – Highlighting plants like Anastatica hierochuntica (the Rose of Jericho) and their historical use in reproductive practices.

2. The Doctrine of Signatures – Examining traditional beliefs linking plant appearance to medicinal uses.

3. The Science of Botany – Celebrating women’s contributions to botanical art and science, from historical illustrations to modern research.
