This Wednesday the film society proudly presents a landmark Hong Kong romantic comedy directed by Peter Chan—–He’s a Woman, She’s a Man (金枝玉叶).

This 1994 classic follows Wing, a devoted young fan who disguises herself as a man to audition for a male singer competition, only to catch the eye of top music producer Sam and his superstar girlfriend Rose. As Wing navigates a glamorous world of pop music, unexpected crushes, and blurred gender lines, the film playfully explores identity, attraction, and the courage to follow one’s heart in 1990s Hong Kong. It blends sparkling wit, tender romance, and unforgettable performances by Leslie Cheung, Anita Yuen, and Carina Lau, offering a heartfelt look at love beyond labels. The screening will be followed by a discussion on gender fluidity, queer representation, and iconic Hong Kong romantic cinema.
