CHALLENGES TO DEMOCRATIC THOUGHT AND PRACTICE IN GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE

Contemporary political and intellectual changes have called into question the idea that democracy can and should become the dominant political regime globally.
In order to understand these developments, this conference gathers scholars to examine non-democratic political thought, understood broadly to include critiques of democracy as well as the study of non-democratic traditions and arguments more generally.
It welcomes a variety of approaches including, but not limited to, historical, comparative, and normative scholarship, and encourages reflection that encompasses disparate global contexts.
The conference will encourage sustained conversations centered on a series of paper presentations by the participants. Discussants will provide commentary on each of the papers. Our intention is to publish both the initial papers and the discussants’ responses as a special issue of a journal.
