Advisor Professional Development
It is important for advisors to become members of professional associations and stay current with best practices in the field. Many professional associations host annual regional, national, and international conferences around the topics in academic advising. These conferences are a great opportunities to connect with other academic advisors around the world, to learn about current advising practices, and to present if you have a proposal accepted!
NACADA: The Global Community for Academic Advising is an association of professional advisors, counselors, faculty, administrators, and students working to enhance the educational development of students. NACADA used to stand for The National Academic Advising Association, but has now become an international community of advisors. NACADA promotes and supports quality academic advising in institutions of higher education. NACADA provides a forum for discussion, debate, and the exchange of ideas pertaining to academic advising through numerous activities and publications. Its website is nacada.ksu.edu. NACADA publishes a biannual refereed journal that promotes scholarly discourse about the research, theory, and practice of academic advising in higher education. You find the NACADA Journal at nacada.ksu.edu/Resources/Journal.aspx. It also has a Clearinghouse (nacada.ksu.edu/Resources/Clearinghouse.aspx) while hosts a wealth of articles and resource pages organized by topic related to academic advising.
The Office of Undergraduate Advising has a limited budget appropriated to sponsor NACADA memberships and sponsor advisors to travel to the NACADA (or other approved academic advising related conferences). Contact the Senior Coordinator for Academic Advising on the application process. Those advisors choosing to present research related to advising, student success strategy, or related topic will receive priority in terms of funding consideration.
