Augmented reality in the travel industry
Augmented Reality (AR) in the travel industry

Option I.   Social Media Rebrand

6 Tips to Improve Brand Continuity on Social Media

  • Specify goals for social media platforms   (i.e. Brand Identity, Audience Personas)
  • Design a consistent visual brand across network accounts  (i.e. a consistent logo, color palette, bio, boilerplate and handle, typography, overall aesthetics)
  • Distribute appropriate social media content for each network

Option II.   City QR-Code Scavenger Hunt in Hutongs

      1. User finds a QR code
  1. Scans QR code with their smartphone
  2. QR link transports them to a corresponding clue page posted on CHP’s official accounts
            • types of clues: audio recording, text, image, storytelling narratives, data summary, geolocation, etc.
  3. User learns about Hutong history while searching for that new clue and the game continues!

Advantages:

  •  Easy to include different types of source materials;
  •  WeChat can easily be the host of clue pages;
  •  Encourage users to visit the historical sites in person, immerse themselves in the experience, while pausing the journey at any time.

Option III.   AR Walking Tours with WeChat Mini Program

The first time we started seeing the true potential of AR to influence the real world was with the Pokémon Go app. AR enhances our current reality with real-world rewards that result in user delight – socially, emotionally, and culturally (i.e. The IKEA Place app lets people see how furniture would look in their home and gets them excited about their next purchase.)

Advantages:

  • Supporting all popular formats such as images, audio, text, video, maps, and other description info.
  • GPS-based: offline and custom maps (Satellite, street, and terrain) and location-based alerts that give users a notification based on where they are.
  • Option to add prompts and reminder messages of upcoming events or comments by other users in the area to the app – new levels of interactive immersion.

Obstacles:

  1. From planning, to production, to uploading, to bug fixing, and uploading, making a new app from scratch can be a lot to learn. It might help to consider existing development tools for AR design, i.e. My Tours.
  2. It can get extremely costly to maintain an AR-based device or application over time.
