A more commonly used word is lanxin huizhi 蘭心蕙質 [orchid-like heart and cymbidium-like character], which is used to describe women’s characteristics being pure, lofty, and elegant. In Chinese culture, lan and hui are considered plants that resemble humans with good qualities. Especially for lan (orchid), because it often grows in the deep valley with inconspicuous flowers but delicate fragrance which is just like those who have talent but do not like to show off, it was listed among the four plants that were called “four gentlemen” (the other three are plum blossom, bamboo, and chrysanthemum).
