Our team members have been working to complete the bridge program and bridge design education courses provided by Engineers in Action (EIA). These courses help the team better understand our role in relation to EIA and help walk us through the bridge design that we will be completing once assigned a site, respectively. Our fundraising chair is also working through the EIA course for fundraising as we begin our DEID-wide year end fundraiser!

We brainstormed designs for a floating toilet! We also talked about fundraising and the upcoming end of year campaign.

The project team worked on design calculations, including load calculations for pedestrian live loads, vehicle loads, and transverse wind and water loads.

Discussed the outline of Mock Review Call 1 and encouraged members to apply for Committee manager positions! Split into committees so that members could get to know everyone else better and people could ask specific questions they had regarding the project. Took some time during the meeting to have everyone research potential grants and their upcoming deadlines.

Team members presented their research about the community we will be working with, wastewater treatment options, and floating toilets. We began to fill out grants to purchase materials for our project.

This week we got all team members on Basecamp, the platform that we use to communicate with EIA and within our team. We also got all team members enrolled in EIA’s Bridge Education (Bedu) program; Bedu is a new platform that has modules for each team role and all team members are expected to complete the “Bridge Program Introduction” course that gives background on EIA and how our team will operate this year. Team mentors — students who have traveled before and will be mentoring this year’s travel team members — will also be taking this introduction course. We discussed on-campus leadership roles: Documentation Manager, Fundraising Manager, Grant Manager, and Publicity. Finally, we highlighted important upcoming dates. First, our Boo Bag fundraiser is in full-swing, with tabling next week and delivering the candy bags on Halloween! Lastly, we are expected a visit from Bridge Corps Member, Chris Busch, on Sunday, November 3, at 3pm. to discuss his work with EIA and specifically Duke’s chapter in the past and what to expect this year!

The West Virginia team went over project team roles and completed its first AutoCAD workshop. We looked over the surveying data from the WV Assessment Trip and drew up profile views for each of the sites we surveyed!
