Now You See It, Again

To understand why Google’s new intelligent eyewear is interesting, it helps to go back to the original Google Glass from more than a decade ago.

Google Glass was built around a small heads-up display positioned above the user’s right eye. You controlled it through voice commands and a touch-sensitive panel on the side of the frame. At the time, it felt like a glimpse of the future. But it was also very obviously a piece of technology attached to your face. The display could be distracting, battery life was limited during real-world use, and extended use of features such as video recording could cause the hardware near your temple to become warm. More than anything, it felt like a technology product rather than a natural accessory. [1][2]

Google’s new Gemini-powered intelligent eyewear takes a very different approach.

The first models arriving this fall do not include a visual display at all. Instead, they are built around an audio-first experience. They look much more like conventional glasses, but include cameras, microphones and speakers that allow Gemini to see and hear what is happening around you. You can activate the assistant by saying “Hey Google” or tapping the side of the frame. [3]

That audio-first approach makes sense because interacting with AI is becoming much more conversational. Instead of typing a single question into a phone and reading the answer on a screen, you can have a back-and-forth dialogue with the assistant while you are walking, shopping or looking at something in front of you. You can ask a question, hear the response and immediately follow up with another question without taking out your phone or navigating through menus.

That difference is important. The original Google Glass was essentially trying to place a miniature screen in front of your eye. The new glasses are designed more like an AI assistant that happens to be built into a pair of glasses. The value is not only in displaying information, but in being able to talk naturally with an assistant that can understand the context of what you are seeing.

The technology behind the glasses is also much more advanced. Google Glass was primarily based on voice commands, menus and a limited set of apps. The new glasses are part of Android XR, a platform developed by Google in collaboration with Samsung and Qualcomm. They are designed to work alongside the phone in your pocket while giving Gemini a real-time view of the world from your perspective. [4][5]

That opens up a much broader range of uses. You could look at a confusing parking sign and ask whether you are allowed to park there. You could ask for walking directions without constantly checking your phone. You could take a photo or video with a voice command, hear a summary of missed text messages, or ask the glasses to find a nearby restaurant based on your preferences. [3]

The translation features are particularly interesting. The glasses can translate spoken language in real time, with audio designed to match the tone and pitch of the original speaker’s voice. They can also translate written text on menus and signs simply by looking at them. [3]

Google is also building in more advanced AI actions. Rather than only answering questions, Gemini can help with multi-step tasks, such as preparing a coffee order through DoorDash and leaving the final confirmation to the user. The glasses are also expected to work with apps such as Uber and Mondly. [3]

There will eventually be a second category of glasses with an in-lens display for information such as directions and live translation captions. But launching with an audio-only model is a practical decision. Removing the display makes it easier to create glasses that are lighter, less distracting and closer in appearance to something people might already wear every day. It also fits naturally with the way many people now use AI: as a spoken conversation that can continue while they move through the world around them. [3][5]

Google is working with Samsung on the hardware platform and with eyewear brands Gentle Monster and Warby Parker on the frames. The first audio glasses are scheduled to arrive this fall and will be compatible with both Android and iOS phones. [3][6]

The most important change is not simply that the hardware has become smaller. The role of the glasses has changed. Google Glass tried to put a computer screen on your face. This new generation is trying to give an AI assistant a way to understand what you are seeing and carry on a natural conversation with you in the moment, without requiring you to pull out your phone.

  1. New Google Glasses to be successful must have a display and mimic the apps on one’s smartphone. Similar Google Glass.

    1. Thanks Dr. Frankel – you don’t think an audio only initial use will be helpful? I agree the image is required but since I use audio conversations in Gemini and ChatGPT thought it might be helpful to start.
