Veo 3.1 Update – One For The Soaps

By: Stephen Toback

I tested the same prompt from the summer which used 3.0 to test 3.1. It’s definitely different. In my subjective option, it was not as good as 3.0. The video in general was super sharp, almost “soap opera” quality as compared to the softer version while the prompt started by calling it “cinematic”. It is not a super clear direction but in my opinion, cinematic is softer and not more harsh.

The audio seemed subjectively a bit better, also crisper and sharper. The head turn at the end was changed but this was

Here’s the prompt:

A cinematic shot, just inside a tree line next to a somber, empty field at sunset, set in the American Civil War era of 1863. A smoke-filled haze floats in the air. The tone is somber and introspective. CHARACTER: The main subject is “Jeb,” a 17-year-old soldier. He is skinny, with a youthful but weary face, gaunt with sunken cheeks and a furrow in his brow. He has oval-shaped brown eyes and disheveled, sandy blonde hair. He wears a worn, ill-fitting gray wool uniform jacket and pants, covered in dirt and grime. SETTING: He is in a forest of medium-width trees during the golden hour just before sunset. Rays of light filter through the trees and smoke. STYLE: The artistic style is cinematic and photorealistic, with a desaturated color palette and highly detailed textures. The pacing is slow and meditative. The resolution should be HD quality with a 2.35:1 cinematic widescreen aspect ratio. The camera is steady, as if on a tripod. SCENE: The shot is a medium close-up framed from Jeb’s left side. He is leaning against a tree, his expression a mix of exhaustion and sorrow as he begins to speak looking away from the camera. After his first line, he makes a dramatic pause, then turns his head to look directly into the camera for his last line. Jeb: (Voice is quiet, raspy) “General Heth said we was only looking for supplies… and there wouldn’t be nuthin’ but a few Yankees about.” (Pause) Jeb: (Looking into camera) “He was wrong.”
