Sony Burano Compact CineAlta Camera

By: Stephen Toback

The $25,000 BURANO Digital Cinema Camera emerges as a compact 8K powerhouse, tailored for solo and small team creators. Weighing 33% less than the VENICE 2, its adaptability across diverse shooting realms is impressive. At its core lies an 8.6K Full-Frame Sensor, delivering striking visuals characterized by a 16-stop dynamic range and a broad color palette. A trio of recording options – X-OCN LT, XAVC H, and XAVC-I, pave the way for a streamlined post-production workflow. Noteworthy is its AI-driven Fast Hybrid AF alongside AI Subject Recognition, which ensures tack-sharp focus. The lens mount is versatile, welcoming both PL and E-mount lenses, anamorphic included. Innovation shines through with in-body image stabilization, an electronic variable ND filter, and support for virtual production. Dual CFexpress slots promise reliable high-speed data recording, while the ergonomic layout, marked by intuitive menu control and a smart grip, enhances operational ease. BURANO has also demonstrated a forward-thinking approach with a pledge for firmware upgrades to augment camera functionalities. To top it off, a suite of optional accessories like the GP-VR100 Grip Remote Control is available, extending the camera’s usability even further.
