DukeMed Pride

DukeMed Pride is a student-led organization of LGBTQIA+ and allied students within the Duke University School of Medicine (DUSOM). DukeMed Pride works to address the health issues of sexual and gender diverse peoples with a cohesive and holistic approach.

Our mission is to provide a supportive environment for LGBTQIA+ students and their allies. We further work to promote the visibility of the LGBTQIA+ community within the School of Medicine and Duke Health, and host events that facilitate education around health issues relevant to LGBTQIA+ patients. We strive to create opportunities for intersectional activism and community building.

Over the years, we have enacted a variety of programs, from movie nights to an LGBT sex education class for Duke undergraduate students. In September we host a tailgate for NC Pride, the statewide celebration of all things LGBT that occurs on Duke campus. We have hosted dinners for Duke undergrads interested in the health sciences, and we have an active role in the Admissions Office to provide information and support to LGBTQIA+ applicants. We have also contributed to curriculum on caring for LGBTQIA+ patients for second and fourth year medical students at Duke. Finally, we have worked together with outside student groups at Duke and other surrounding campuses to organize professional student mixers and other networking opportunities. One of our largest projects has been creating the Duke OutList, a list of allies and queer-identified faculty in DUSOM, that is accessible to students.
