Congratulations to Meredith and co-workers on the publication of their paper “Substituent Effects and Mechanism in a Mechanochemical Reaction” in JACS! The authors used single-molecule force spectroscopy to explore the force-coupled rates of the mechanically-driven spiropyran to merocyanine reaction and discovered a nice Hammett linear free energy relationship to help explain the results.

A great study on the mechanical susceptibility of this new mechanophore that has real promise for uses in other polymer-based materials.
