I have COVID (or my loved one does) and we are in the hospital

We are adding new studies all the time so please check this page frequently.

Treatment Studies

(studies trying to improve health with a medication)

ACTIV4: Inpatient COVID-19 StudyEnrolling Now

  • Population: Adults currently in the hospital with COVID-19
  • Purpose: We are doing this study to compare a lower dose to a higher dose blood thinner to speed recovery and prevent blood clots in patients who are in the hospital for COVID-19. The chance of blood clots in patients who are diagnosed with COVID-19 is higher than for patients who do not have COVID-19. Clots in the arteries, veins, and heart can cause heart attacks, strokes, and blockages. Doctors are already giving most patients in the hospital for COVID-19 blood thinners at different doses.

ACTIV-3: Inpatient COVID-19 Study – Enrolling Now

  • Population: Adults that have tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 3 days and need to be admitted to the hospital.
  • Purpose: This research study is looking at a new investigational drugs to see if they can help people with COVID-19 get better and go home faster.

AirFLO2 with COVID-19- Enrolling Now

  • Population: Adults that have tested positive for COVID-19 in and are admitted to the hospital.
  • Purpose: We are doing this study to find out if the study device, called AirFLO2, can improve oxygen and decrease the amount of effort it takes to breathe in patients with COVID-19.The AirFLO2 is a small, portable facemask that can be carried around and self-applied to stop coughing episodes, improve oxygen levels, and decrease effort to breathe.

Observational Studies

(Studies that collect and look at data or body tissue to help understand a disease)

Energy Expenditure and Metabolic Effects of COVID-19Enrolling Now

  • Population: Adults hospitalized with COVID-19, currently on a ventilator, and are expected to stay in the ICU for more than 1 day
  • Purpose: We are doing this study to understand what the caloric and metabolic needs are of the body for people with COVID-19. This information can be used to give proper nutrition to patients in the ICU who often have specific nutritional needs because of illness.
  • More Information: please click here for more information about the study and who is able to participate.

Duke COVID-19 Shared Repository – Enrolling Now

  • Population: Adults and children 12+ who are in the hospital with a suspected or confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19
  • Purpose: We are doing this study to build a central repository (storehouse) of data and samples that will help support the research Duke is doing on COVID-19.
  • More Information: please click here for more information about the study and who is able to participate.

ICU Biorepository – Enrolling Now

  • Population: Critically ill patients in an ICU setting who have COVID-19
  • Purpose: This study is a biorepository (storehouse) where samples and data from critically ill patients with COVID-19 are stored. The reason for this study is to develop a collection of samples and data that can be shared with other doctors and researchers to help them answer important questions about the virus and possibly help develop treatments and tests for the future.
  • More Information: please click here for more information about the study and who is able to participate.
