Rare Disease Day Tabling Event – February 28, 2023

February 28, 2022

In commemoration of International Rare Disease Day on February 28th, the Duke Consortium for Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC) partners with Duke University undergraduate and graduate students from the Duke Rare Cancer and Health Disparity Coalition to host a unique, student-driven tabling event. Our goal is to develop educational tools for patients, physicians, researchers and community members to raise awareness for rare cancers like IBC, which is also designated a cancer health disparity by NIH.

At this interactive table on Bryan Center Plaza, students, faculty and research staff worked together to share information about Rare Cancers and how to get involved with the Consortium members at Duke University, North Carolina Central University, University of North Carolina, and the Durham Community.  At our 2023 event, more than 150 people, including students, faculty and Duke leadership, stopped by to learn more. Over 100 undergraduates signed up to join the student coalition and/or become involved with fundraising, advocacy, and research for rare cancers.

Kendra Scott Fundraiser – 2018

Dr. Gayathri Devi’s team and volunteers from many walks of life – IBC survivors, students, Duke staff, community members, and partnering staff from UNC-Chapel Hill – joined us for sweet treats and jewelry. Twenty percent of all sales benefited the Duke Consortium for Inflammatory Breast Cancer, creating a successful fundraiser with Kendra Scott at the Streets of Southpoint!
