Writing Feedback Workshop

We will spend class today giving and receiving feedback. We will have five 13-minute Sessions of feedback where you will be doing one of the following:

  1. Group one-on-one meeting with Prof. Stephens-Martinez.
  2. Receiving feedback from all other groups not meeting with Prof. Stephens-Martinez.
  3. Giving feedback to another group.

To prepare for your feedback sessions, you should create an Ed post with the following:

  1. The 1 or 2 sections you most want feedback on.
  2. The 1 or 2 requests for feedback you have for each section.
  3. Link to Overleaf if you are willing to share.

The feedback session with the other groups will go as follows:

  1. If it’s your group’s turn for feedback:
    1. Pull up your manuscript for all to see, preferably on the projector.
    2. Show them your research questions and answer any clarifying questions.
    3. Show them one of the sections you want feedback on and tell them your question(s).
  2. If you are giving feedback:
    1. Ensure you understand the research question(s).
    2. Ask clarifying questions.
    3. Focus on what they are asking you to do. Any other thoughts you have that are outside of scope should be saved for later if there is time.
    4. Limit your suggestions to things they can do in less than one hour.

Example requests for feedback:

  • Introduction – Is this a reasonable argument for why the research question(s) is important?
  • Related Work – Is there a gap in the related work section? Do you have suggestions on how to organize the related work?
  • Context – Is there any information you wish you had to better understand the context of where my data is from?
  • Methods – Do you have concerns about the methodology? Are there details that need to be mentioned?
  • Results – How do I best present the X aspect of my results? Is there a better way to discuss result Y? I’m not sure about figure Z, my goal is A, any suggestions?
  • Limitations – Are there limitations that I should mention that are not listed here?
  • Discussion – Are there implications of my results that I haven’t mentioned? What else makes sense to put in this section? Do you disagree with what is here?
