Writing Deliverable 1

Due: 2/6

Goal: Convey the initial ideas of your research project in as few words as possible so you can receive the most impactful feedback without spending too much time on unnecessary work.

Requirements

  1. This should be a pdf using either the ICER or SIGCSE TS template.
  2. Has all section and subsection headers you think you will likely have.
    1. Goal: Convey the general structure you expect (at this point in time) the paper to be
    2. It must have the following: Introduction, Related Work, Context, Methods, Results, Limitations, Future Work/Discussion, and Conclusion.
    3. It may have subsections, such as different clusters of related work or a subsection per research question.
  3. The following sections must have, at minimum, a bulleted list of the primary points you plan to make, along with at least some supporting information.
    1. Introduction with
      1. Motivation – Why should the reader care about this work? Why is it important to study?
      2. Research Questions – There should be at least 1 per person in the group
    2. Related work with
      1. At least 4 papers (each group member should have read 3 research papers at this point) that will likely be relevant to the research project. It should have at least one bullet summarizing what is relevant about this work in relation to the research project.
      2. At least 4 more papers that your group plans to read and confirm whether they belong in the related work section. There should be a 1 sentence bullet explaining why you think it will be relevant based on a read of the title and abstract.
    3. Context with bullets on the primary information needed to understand this research project, such as.
      1. Course(s) and semester(s) the data is from. Or the equivalent.
        1. And general relevant context, such as if your research focuses on the peer instruction data for the project a description of what are the peer instructions the data is from, what kind of data you have from it, etc.
      2. How many people are in the data and any other relevant counts.
  4. All other sections may be left blank, but you may add text there if you want feedback on your ideas for those sections, such as listing limitations that you already think are relevant.

If you are unsure how to approach something, I recommend looking at one of my more recent SIGCSE TS papers (with Shao-Heng) as an example.

Grading

  • Exemplary – Above and beyond Satisfactory, such as a fully fleshed-out outline of the required sections that require little feedback on improvements.
  • Satisfactory – The outline fulfills all of the above criteria.
  • Not Yet – The outline is missing one part.
  • Unassessable – There an outline, but it does not fulfill the Not Yet criteria.
