High School Students
Join Our High School Internship Program
Are you interested in gaining research and leadership skills? Understanding our local ecosystems? Having fun? Making some money? If you answered yes to any of those questions, consider applying to become one of Duke University Marine Lab’s (DUML) Summer Interns!
As a DUML Summer Intern, you will experience research alongside DUML scientists, develop and deliver hands-on science outreach in our community, AND get paid.
Detailed Information and Requirement
The DUML Summer Intern program seeks talented high school students from Carteret and Craven counties with diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- The program is open to all interested 9th-12th graders (the grade you are in, as of February 2026).
- Summer Interns must commit to a minimum of 18 days out of 20 days of STEM Pathways programming in June and July. Potential shifts will occur Monday-Friday in June and July for approximately 7 hours each day (with a maximum of 35 hours/week). All Summer Interns who conduct community outreach are eligible for summer stipends – paid at the completion of the program.
- Upon acceptance to the Summer Intern program, students will be required to attend both training sessions on June 17th and 18th, 2027, from 9am – 3pm at the Duke University Marine Lab. Food and beverage will be provided. If a Summer Intern fails to attend BOTH trainings, they will be unable to participate during the 2026 season- no exceptions.
- CCATS transportation vouchers are available upon request for any Carteret County intern needing transportation assistance.
Expectations for DUML Summer Interns
- Summer Interns are expected to arrive on time and be prepared for science and/or outreach responsibilities.
- Summer Interns are required to adhere to the DUML Community Science dress code, attendance, and behavior policies.
- All cell phones are to be stowed during Summer Intern hours unless the task requires use of a cell phone — no phones during lunch especially.
- DUML Summer Intern opportunities consist of working with DUML scientists, DUML graduate and undergraduate students, children ages 5-13, and parents. As such, professionalism is expected at all times.
