Farmers (in particular pest managers) are about 40 years ahead of oncologists. Oncologists and pest managers have similar problems: Both pests and cancers evolve therapeutic resistance when we apply chemical therapies to them. This is the most important problem in oncology today.
Pest managers have developed a set of mutually reinforcing strategies to prevent therapeutic resistance from overwhelming their crops. Those strategies are called integrated pest management. We will discuss how those strategies can be translated to the oncology clinic. Initial efforts, in the form of adaptive therapy, have been successful. Those results have broad and important implications, not just for all the different forms of cancer, but for other evolving diseases like bacterial infections and malaria.
