The film follows Tampopo, a struggling widow, as she works to perfect her ramen-making craft with the help of an unlikely, rag-tag team. Though lighthearted and comedic on the surface, the film offers deep commentary on Japanese culture and identity. Luke and Samir also explore the many ways in which the film treats food as more than just sustenance, and unpack Itami’s very intentional use of the American Western genre.
