On this week’s episode of CineAmerican Dream, hosts Manisha Panthee and Clare Sparling explore the 2013 Bollywood hit, Dhoom 3. A continuation of the Dhoom franchise, the film stars Aamir Khan, Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra. Dhoom 3 follows the story of twins Samir and Samar who are trying to exact revenge on the Great Western Bank for closing their father’s Great Indian Circus. To try and stop the twins, the bank calls in two cops from India, Jai and Ali. The film chronicles their back and forth battles in action packed scenes featuring dramatic motorcycle chases, dizzying plot twists, and interludes of song and dance.
While a Bollywood hit, the film is set in Chicago and thus is representative of an increasingly common genre of Bollywood films featuring Indians living outside of India. Manisha and Clare break down the film, placing it in the context of Bollywood as an industry and exploring what director Vijary Krishna Acharya’s depiction of America in Dhoom 3 says about India’s perspective on America.
