SALUD: Scholar Academy for Latinxs United for Diversity

photo of Salud scholars handling human hearts in a labSALUD’s vision is to empower Durham Latinx youth to be catalysts for progressive change on a personal and communal level. The program’s mission is to inspire Durham Latinx youth to pursue health-related professions by critically exploring health through a social justice lens. 

  • SALUD’s syllabus includes social determinants of health in Durham, food insecurity/food justice, healthy lifestyles/obesity, mental health, sexual and reproductive justice, healthy relationships and intimate partner violence, substance use disorders and harm reduction, resilience after trauma, farmworker health, and migrant justice. 
  • SALUD engages lots of community partners to speak and lead activities as experts in their fields. SALUD programming also includes anatomy demonstrations, standardized patient interviews, field trips, culturally relevant programming, mentorship panels, built-in mentorship with undergraduate students, college and professional readiness/development, tours, and the use of technology.

The program lasts 5 months (October-March), with twelve 7-hour sessions on Saturdays. 


ELIGIBILITY. This program is for…

  • High School (9-12) 

The program encourages applications from individuals who identify as belonging to any of the following groups:

  • Communities that are historically underrepresented in STEM, biomedical sciences, or medical fields
  • First-generation (college-bound or currently enrolled in higher education)
  • Historically or socioeconomically disadvantaged
