The Outreach Design Education (ODE) Summer Design Camp is both an academic experience for high school students and a professional development and training opportunity for middle and high school STEM teachers.ODE is an immersive biomedical engineering design experience that aims to introduce students, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds, to engineering design and foster an appreciation for STEM. Students will participate in biomedical innovation through engineering design. This focus on design, rather than conceptual or abstract learning exercises, gives students the practical skills to identify problems and develop solutions. With these skills, students can transform an idea from a far-off concept into a tangible product.
On Monday through Thursday each week, teachers will observe and support students as they are introduced to and apply the engineering design process. On Fridays, teachers work with the program leaders to create design-centric instructional content that they can take back to their classrooms. Over the course of five weeks, teachers will design and implement at least two lessons that use the aspects of the engineering design process to enhance students’ engagement and STEM content understanding. Implementation will take place during the following school year.
Program activities include:
- Hands-on workshops, labs, and innovation sessions
- Lectures with ODE mentors and guest speakers
The program lasts 5 weeks over the summer and is offered annually.
