The Duke Office of the North Carolina Area Health Education Centers (NC AHEC) and the City of Medicine Academy (CMA) are celebrating 18 years of partnering to support local students. The collaboration aims to enhance the health-focused educational experience of the more than 400 local students attending CMA.
Duke AHEC supports CMA through student internships, clinical exploration experiences, and interactive hands-on introductory activities. CMA students expand their understanding of the clinical research workforce by interacting with healthcare professionals, which broadens the range of careers students consider after high school. In fact, many CMA graduates have earned associate degrees in health science and certifications as nursing assistants and pharmacy technicians.
Duke AHEC has been integral in supporting CMA’s mission to “challenge students through rigorous and authentic academic and healthcare experiences in collaboration with community partners.” Duke AHEC administers a Health Careers Club for students to learn about time management, effective communication, critical thinking, and healthcare careers. Moreover, Duke AHEC provides college tours, clinical observations, ACT preparation support, a summer camp, summer internships, and access to attend the NC AHEC Future Leaders conference.
“We’re so proud to celebrate 18 years of partnership with the City of Medicine Academy. This collaboration has been instrumental in inspiring students and helping them build a foundation for a successful career in healthcare.” – Monica Taylor, Director of Health Careers & Associate Director of Continuing Education, Duke AHEC Program.
The Center for Pathway Programs at Duke is proud to highlight Duke AHEC’s partnership with CMA as a long-standing collaboration that successfully prepares future healthcare leaders to serve patients in North Carolina.
