James Chappel is the Hunt Family Assistant Professor of History. His first book is entitled Catholic Modern: The Challenges of Totalitarianism and the Remaking of the Church (Harvard University Press, 2018). His work on the Church led him to towards issues of family, welfare, and political economy—and, therefore, towards issues of aging. He is currently at work on a project called Old Volk: Modern Germany and the Invention of Old Age. It will explore the construction of “old age” in modern Germany as a coherent object of culture, medicine, and social policy
