Roman Portrait Statuary of Athens

Sheila Dillon (Duke University) is currently engaged in a project to study the full range of material remains of Roman portrait statuary from the city of Athens: heads, bodies, busts, herms, and inscribed statue bases. Her overarching goal is to write a history of Athenian portrait statuary from the later Hellenistic period to the high Imperial period. The core evidence comes from the Athenian Agora, an excavation of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. The model for this book project is Roman Portrait Statuary from Aphrodisias (2006), of which she was a co-author.
