MURAL CON INOCENTE

Mural with Visiting Artist Inocente

September, 2013

Students from our classes worked alongside area high school students and our Two-Way Bridges team on a mural project headed by Mexican-American, California based, guest artist, Inocente Izucar.  The focus of the project at the Holton Resource and Community Center was to engage local youth, many of them considered “at risk,” with an artist who has recreated her life through art.  Inocente, once a homeless youth and now a nationally acclaimed artist painted alongside the students, answered their questions about her life, and left us all inspired.  Our local youth created t-shirts and the mural seen in this exhibit while working side-by-side with our team.

Downtown Durham Mural. Encuentro | Encounters

October 26 through November 20, 2013

Focused in the theme of “celebrating the presence of the Latino community in Durham,” and developed in collaboration with a group of artists from the Dominican Republic (marhmi) and the Global Leadership Institute, a local NGO devoted to enhance leadership skills for local teachers and high school students, the Two Way Bridges team produced a large mural at the side of the oldest Mexican restaurant in town, Toreros. Located in the corner of North Duke and Main Street, at the heart of Durham, the mural was the result of a series of workshops in which students shared their experiences, views, and hopes regarding how the two communities should acknowledge each other and grow- together.

Mural with Cornelio Campos & Miguel Rojas-Sotelo . Migrante, Alas de Mariposa &  Dreamer | Soñador

November 2013

The Migrant Butterfly Wings Mural, designed by Cornelio Campos and painted with assistance of a group of Durham and Duke-based students, was realized inside this gallery.  A second one, now hung alongside it, entitled the Dreamer Mural, was designed and painted by the Two-Way Bridges Team and students from Building Creative Communities class. These murals represent the artists’ creative interactions with the themes of borders and immigration in our communities, and an intermingling of influences that happen when we construct new bridges and divides are crossed.

Two-Way Bridges Collaborative Videography

Students in the classes worked closely with members of the group Jóvenes Líderes en Acción at El Centro Hispano to create stories of educational dreams within our community.  Some of the pieces shown here were made by several students working together. Some of them were made by those from the Durham community, some from Duke, and others by guest Latino students working on their own.  All have been done collaboratively in one sense or another.  All of them are united by the theme of dreams.
