On behalf of the Bouchet Society, the Black Tie Dinner Committee is excited to announce that our 6th Annual Ida Stephens Owens Black Tie Dinner will be held on Saturday, December 1, 2018. The cocktail hour will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner and the program at 7:00 p.m.
This year we are delighted to have Zakiya Whatley, PhD, as our Bouchet-Note speaker. Her work is focused on science education, formal and informal, across all sectors, and she is a career advocate for underrepresented minorities in science. Dr. Whatley currently works as Program Manager of the Biological Sciences Graduate Program at the University of Maryland. She joined Maryland following a teaching post-doc and assistant professorship at Gettysburg College where she taught biology courses, managed an undergraduate research lab, and led diversity initiatives on campus. With fellow Duke alumna Titilayo Shodiya, PhD, she is the co-creator of Dope Labs Podcast, which was recently selected for further development by Spotify. Dr. Whatley is a graduate of Hampton University (BS, Biology) and a 2014 alumna of the Duke University Program in Genetics and Genomics.
We are also honored to have Jeffrey Forbes, PhD, as our keynote speaker. A graduate of Stanford University (BS, computer science) and the University of California, Berkeley (computer science), Dr. Forbes has published widely on computer science education and recently developed a set of strategies for retaining African American boys in computer science studies. A Duke faculty member since 2001, Dr. Forbes is currently Associate Professor of the Practice of Computer Science.
We are again thrilled to have major support from university administrators, allowing students to attend at no cost. Please note that prior registration is required to attend. In a few weeks, we will circulate a registration form explaining how students, faculty, and staff may register. In the meantime, please share with members of your department or program and add the date to your calendar!
