BOOST Alumni Reunion Celebrates a Growing Community of STEM Pathways and Inclusion

On May 3rd, the Great Hall of the Duke School of Medicine was filled with warmth, energy, and shared purpose as 25 alumni and current participants gathered for BOOST’s annual Alumni Reunion. This event brought together pioneers from BOOST’s inaugural cohort (2004–2007), current Junior Coaches-in-Training (high school 9th graders), and Coaches (college undergraduates and graduate students) in a vibrant celebration of community, growth, and opportunity.

What is BOOST?

BOOST (Building Opportunities and Overtures in Science & Technology) is a Duke University initiative dedicated to fostering diversity and inclusion in STEM fields. Founded with a vision to create continuous pathways for young people— including those from underrepresented backgrounds—BOOST combines mentorship, experiential learning, and community building to empower participants at every stage of their academic journey.

A Living Network of Support and Success

The reunion was a heartfelt occasion marked by tearful reunions, enthusiastic networking, and inspiring conversations. Program Director Douglass Coleman updated attendees on the latest developments, including Duke’s new guidelines shaped by recent federal policy changes. The event reflected BOOST’s commitment to navigating challenges while steadfastly supporting equity in STEM education.
Culinary delights from Sazon de mi Huasteca, run by the family of alumna Pamela Gonzalez (a BOOST Scholar, Junior Coach, and Coach herself), added a personal touch to the gathering. Guests enjoyed tamales, Spanish rice, and black beans—flavors that echoed the cultural diversity BOOST cherishes and uplifts.

Building Bridges Across Generations

One highlight was a lively discussion between Bryan, a high school student, Srikar, a college senior, and a computer programmer who traveled from Brooklyn. Their shared journey through computer science illustrated the power of BOOST’s mentorship model and how early encouragement can shape lifelong careers.
To keep this vibrant community connected, two WhatsApp channels were launched—one for sharing educational and career opportunities, and another for casual socialising—ensuring that BOOST alumni and current members remain linked beyond the reunion.

Looking Ahead

An alumni slideshow captured the remarkable journeys of BOOST participants, affirming the program’s impact over nearly two decades. Plans are already underway for next year’s reunion on May 2nd, 2026.
Reflecting on the event, Program Director Douglass Coleman stated: “This was a beautiful event! Watching members of the first BOOST cohort, now in their 30s, bond with undergraduate and high school BOOST students was magical! Dr. Armstrong’s vision was of a continuous pathway, and these reunions show we’re moving closer to making that vision a permanent reality. Creating a networked community for those of us not born into privilege is now a reality.”
BOOST alum Abdurrauf Muhammad also shared, “Attending the BOOST alumni reunion was an incredibly fulfilling experience — in a way it felt like coming home. Reconnecting with the BOOST community reminded me just how pivotal this program has been, not only in shaping my journey but in opening doors for so many others. I am grateful to call myself a BOOST alum and proud of the lasting impact the program continues to make on the Durham community.”

Why BOOST Matters

In today’s complex social climate, programs like BOOST are more vital than ever. They provide equitable access, mentorship, and inspiration to young people who might otherwise be overlooked, transforming not only individual lives but the face of STEM itself.
As BOOST continues to evolve, its alumni network stands as a testament to what’s possible when opportunity meets support—and when inclusion is not just a goal but a lived experience.
