Hi! My name is Linda and I’m a sophomore computer science major participating in this year’s alternative spring break program. I grew up with my mother and grandparents in the beautiful country of Belarus but have lived near Cleveland, Ohio since I was eight years old.
Coming to Duke has been a wonderful experience beyond the clear improvement in weather! I became involved in dancing and am a member of both Duke Swing Dance and Sabrosura (Duke’s Latin dance group). I hold two work-study jobs and volunteer at a retirement center called The Forest at Duke. I discovered my enjoyment of working with and learning from others through a service-learning course at Duke and am now prioritizing such experiences in my life, which brought me to this program. Despite my interests in human rights and social equality, I came into this knowing very little about human trafficking and feeling quite distanced from the topic. By learning more about this widespread problem, especially from directly affected individuals, I hope to become more knowledgeable about how to provide support for victims and bring awareness of the issue back to our campus.
