Are you a current Duke student interested in environmental science and environmental health? In mentoring and teaching high school students? In giving back to our local Durham community?
You can help us plan and implement AHEAD this spring by joining Duke bioSTEMs!
Duke bioSTEMs launched in Spring 2021 under the Duke University Marine Lab Scholars Program with faculty advisors Meagan Dunphy-Daly and Jason Somarelli as a way to share resources and knowledge with local high school students interested in the STEM field. For the past year and a half, our organization has partnered with an AP Environmental Science class at Northern High School to share a curriculum of STEM-related modules with activities and guest speakers along with two-on-one mentoring with the students and hope to grow into more classrooms this year.
This year, we have partnered with two Nicholas School of the Environment organization dedicated to working to address environmental injustice and the need for a more diverse workforce and student population in environmental health fields in Durham.
These programs include:
- The Environmental Science Summer Program (ESSP) – an annual two week summer program where high school students learn about environmental studies through fieldwork
- HackBio – intensive day programs to engage high school students in experiential learning and broaden their exposure to STEM careers
