Outreach

“But someone will say, ‘You have faith and I have works.’ Show me your faith without works, and I by my works will show you my faith.”

-James 2:18

The Church is called to an active faith that must be more than pure intellectual enterprise or abstract religious concept.  The Wesley community strives for this sort of active faith, and Outreach encourages the community to show their faith by their work.  By turning the community outward in this way, we grow, and we show others something about who we are and who God is.

“The task of prophetic ministry is to nurture, nourish and evoke a consciousness and perception alternative to the consciousness and perception of the dominant culture around us.”

-Walter Brueggemann, The Prophetic Imagination

The outreach team encourages Wesley to become imaginative (and perhaps even perplexing) with works of mercy.  Part of this duty lies in sharing the goings-on in the life of the community, but it also involves hosting events or coordinating acts of kindess or hospitality.  We’ll keep the website running and maintain ties to local churches but also provide hot chocolate to tenters in K-Ville on cold nights or set up a mass cookie-drop in the libraries during reading period.

If you have questions or would like to get involved, you can contact us at wesley-outreach@duke.edu.
