For several years, authors have written books based on Maplesoft products on a variety of topics from Calculus to Computer Algebra, from Physics to Mathematical Modeling, from Engineering to Differential Equations. You can see several of those listed on the Maplesoft Website.

Examples of recent books include:

Mathematical Modeling with Maple,

Complex Analysis for Mathematics and Engineering,

An Introduction to Modern Mathematical Computing with Maple, and

Engineering Uncertainty and Risk Analysis.

Maplesoft has a vibrant Author Support Program that provides support and assistance to authors of such books. We encourage our users, who would like to take the time to write a book, to consider a book based on Maple or MapleSim.

Eligible authors will get free copies of our products, and we will promote the book to the Maplesoft user community across the globe. The book will be promoted also through our website, newsletters, as well as social media tools such as Facebook and Twitter. It is a great way to showcase the book and get recognised.

 Maple 16, released recently, also has an e-Book publisher that lets you convert Maple documents into a book format. If you do not want to go through the traditional publishing route, you can also consider publishing an eBook.

We are particularly keen to see new books on engineering topics where we don’t have many titles at this point.

New Software Evaluation: FlowJo

OIT Software Licensing is evaluating the current and prospective usage of FlowJo.

FlowJo software loads flow cytometry data and facilitates complex data analysis for flow experiments. FlowJo is very powerful, and can be used for many different types of experiments.

FlowJo analyzes data collected by a flow cytometer (data from the cytometer must be saved as an fcs compliant file). FlowJo’s strength is in analyzing whole experiments encompassing many related samples. In addition to gating and statistics, FlowJo also can analyze DNA/Cell Cycle, Kinetics, and Proliferation Experiments. FlowJo has sophisticated tools for generating statistics, graphs, tables, webpages, and even movies.

A site license for FlowJo has been requested through our new software evaluation request form (http://oit.duke.edu/comp-print/software/request/it_request.php) for central funding/distribution, and we put together a wiki with some information on the software and some of the purchase options.

If your department currently uses this software or if you are interested in using this software or have considered purchasing this before, we invite you to visit the wiki and comment on it.  The information that we collect in this manner will help us determine whether or not central funding and distribution would be beneficial to the Duke community.

Summary of wiki:

This is clearly a specialized product, and it is unclear how much is spent annually on FlowJo. That said, the site license options are very appealing for this scenario. http://www.flowjo.com/home/fls.html If there is support for a $275 per license per year buy-in for 25 licenses, we can easily add licenses based on usage if the 25 can be maintained. We would need some kind of evidence that Duke researchers and labs would be willing to pay up to $275 per license per year and that the minimum quantity of 25 licenses could be maintained. The discount does increase by adding more usage, but 25 is the sweet spot and the discounts aren’t very steep from there without a massive increase in usage.  In this way, Duke could get the discounted volume pricing based on usage without one lab or school having to buy the minimum quantity.

A challenge to many students in applied statistics courses is getting from concept to effective application. While most statistics software requires the user to memorize where techniques and graphics are located on menus, JMP® provides a smart interface that reinforces concepts and provides an intuitive framework for real-world data analysis.

JMP provides the complete spectrum of statistics and graphics for engineering, science and business needs – from basic analytics to the most complex analyses a Ph.D. student may encounter. JMP runs on Windows and Macintosh operating systems and also functions as an easy, point-and-click interface to SAS where the user can create, run or access SAS Programs and data.

JMP is visual and interactive. It drives you through statistics using point, click, drag, and drop, and then displays results as statistics and multiple graphs in the same window. You can easily subset, perform subsequent analyses, and create 3D and moving graphics to help understand the results of your analyses.

Changes to Microsoft System Center Licensing

With the release of System Center 2012, Microsoft has changed its licensing model.  For our purposes, there are two main changes:

  • The names of some of the products have changed
  • The right to run Management Server software is included with Datacenter (unlimited virtualization) Server MLs and Client MLs, and all System Center 2012 products include the right to run a runtime version of SQL Server Technology to support System Center.

Included in the Microsoft Campus Agreement are Server MLs and Client MLs for all Duke managed Operating System Environments (OSEs).  This includes the following software to manage all Duke OSEs:

  • Operations Manager
  • Configuration Manager
  • Data Protection Manager
  • Service Manager
  • Virtual Machine Manager
  • Endpoint Protection
  • Orchestrator
  • App Controller
  • SQL Server 2008 R2 (for use with System Center only)

This is IT/Operational server software and will only be distributed to Duke IT Staff or faculty/staff members with written approval from their IT departments.  This software is distributed at no cost under the Microsoft Campus Agreement, which is funded jointly by OIT and DHTS.

Part 1: Data Analysis with MATLAB

Attend this free seminar to find out how you can use MATLAB and its add-on products to develop algorithms, visualize and analyze data, and perform numeric computation.

MathWorks engineers will provide an overview of MATLAB through live demonstrations, examples, and user testimonials, showing how you can use MATLAB and related toolboxes to:

SPSS Grace Period Begins Today

The grace period for SPSS purchases starts today.  Any licensing purchased (renewal or new) between April 1 and July 1 will receive a free renewal which will extend the expiration date to July 1, 2013.

Feel free to go ahead and renew your SPSS licenses now even though we don’t yet have the renewal codes from IBM.  We keep track of all paid orders and will send the codes automatically when we receive them.

JMP 10 and JMP Pro 10 are now available as no-cost downloads for Duke faculty, staff, and students.  There is also the option to install over the network as opposed to downloading the installers if preferred.

Summary of wiki:

Wolfram Alpha Pro is a service that costs $4.99 per user per month ($2.99/month for students).  The site license is a cost-saving purchase if there are 136 active users of Alpha Pro at Duke at any given time.  If all Mathematica users at Duke purchased a subscription for Pro for a year, it would cost about $177,000, but it is not the case that all Mathematica users are buying Alpha Pro.  We don’t have any metrics for Alpha Pro purchasing at Duke, actually, since it’s something that people buy individually as needed on their personal computers or phones.  Information on demand and usage gathered on this wiki will help determine whether or not a site license makes sense or if it is better to just have individuals buy it as they want.

Maple 16 Now Available

Maple 16 has been released and is now available.  Duke faculty and staff may download Maple software at no cost and use it on Duke-owned and personally-owned computers for Duke purposes.  Students may purchase a personal perpetual license for $35 through OIT.  With this release, OIT will no longer be offering Maple 13 licensing.
