What does it take to spark some 8th grade students into focusing on college? First, get them to a college campus to experience it directly. Second, have them spend time with Duke students. This is where we need you. Give 90 minutes of your time to these Durham students by walking with them around campus, asking them questions about their interests, and talking about what it means to be a college student.
Sign up here to help lead a group of 10 students on Tuesday, October 30. You’ll be glad you did — not just for the t-shirt or the lunch or exploring new parts of campus. You’ll be touched by the interaction with these students.
The need to support potential first-to-college students is more urgent than ever. Witness the recent story in the paper reporting “the odds that a young person in the U.S. will go to college if their parents haven’t — 29 percent — are among the lowest of developed countries.”
