We hope that participating Duke staff learn as much, and have as good a time, as the Durham students. The Duke staff get to explore labs, residence halls and exotic places like the Human Patient Simulator and 3D Virtual Reality DiVE which they normally don’t get to see.
Each staff escort will be assigned a group of ten students from one of the Durham middle schools. The school will provide two chaperones — usually a teacher and guidance counselor — and the School Days program will line up a Duke student as a guide and walking mentor. Your job is to keep the group on schedule, to enjoy the interaction with the students and to have fun. They are interesting young teens and the conversations with them are often very memorable.
We begin with a breakfast and training session in the Cameron Media Room at 8:30. You will receive your name badge, radio (walkie-talkie), long-sleeve t-shirt, and customized schedule of activities. Click here for the overview of the day.
We will also be posting the detailed schedule in advance if you want to get a jump on knowing how to find everything, contact your academic session presenter, or do a little research on the subject area. It’s not necessary to do any of these things but can be fun.
Be sure to wear comfortable shoes for the day as there is always more walking than you expect.
We close the day with a professionally done slide show of all the groups in action and with a brief talent show. If you have a singing or dancing talent you would like to share, please let David Stein or the School Days Coordinator know during the day.
