Three weeks in Hobart, Tasmania

After 35+ hours of travel, yesterday I arrived in Hobart, Tasmania to work with colleagues at the Australian Marine Mammal Centre at the Australian Antarctic Division and the Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies at University of Tasmania

So many flights..

During the next three weeks, I will be working on parts of my PhD dissertation and proposals for future Antarctic research. I am very excited to be able to spend time here and to be able to chat with and work with all of the amazing aussies down under!

Scientific Research and Education Networking Event

The first annual Scientific Research and Education Networking event will be held this Thursday, April 25th, 2013 at the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores.

Teachers and parents, come on out at 5:30 to check out presentations from scientists (like me!) from the Coastal Carolina region. You are guaranteed to get ideas and materials to take home to your kids and/or to implement in your classroom.

My Visit with Local 8th Graders

Two weeks ago, I had the pleasure of visiting approximately 100 8th grade students at Broad Creek Middle School and Morehead City Middle School, located along North Carolina’s Crystal Coast.

I shared with the students facts about whales and Antarctica and shared with them some stories from my research and things I have learned. I also showed them the movie I created about my work and let them test their knowledge with the Quiz I have made. The student’s seemed to really enjoy my visit and I know that I had a blast chatting with them. I hope I get the chance to chat with more students in the near future.
