Duke Residency: Catherine Hernandez

For one night only, November 2, Duke welcomes Catherine Hernandez, Artistic Director of Sulong Theatre Company (Toronto) for a performance of her “Eating with Lola” at 8pm in the Bryan Center, Sheafer Theater. The show is free and open to the public.

Follow Hernandez’s blog for more information about her work and other incarnations of this performance. For now, here’s a small plot synopsis:

Lola (“Grandmother” in Filipino) is so old and sick she has to be spoon-fed by her granddaughter, Grace. But it wasn’t always like this. Over the course of her final meal on earth, Lola explains how it was always her job to find food – even of that meant stealing it. Part confession, part revelation, Lola’s epic tale unravels the entire modern history of Manila from the time of the Thomasites to the second wave of Filipino migration to the United States – one spoonful at a time.

Ms. Hernandez’s visit is sponsored by Duke’s Department of Theater Studies, Center for Canadian Studies and Women’s Studies Program.
