As a core partner university with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Duke University faculty, postdocs, and students have access to a number of unique opportunities to take advantage of the state-of-the-art facilities and collaborate with researchers at ORNL. Current or upcoming research and funding opportunities for Fall 2020 are listed below.

High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) Rapid AccessContinuousHFIR and SNS, two of the world’s most advanced neutron scattering research facilities, offer thirty instruments covering a wide range of science and capabilities. Rapid Access proposals grant beam time to potential high-impact science outside of the periodic proposal calls.

Mail-In, Proof-of-Principle, Discretionary Time proposals allocated different amounts of beam time.

CNMS Rapid Access User ProposalContinuousThe CNMS nanoscience research program provides users with access to a broad range of capabilities for nanomaterials design, synthesis, characterization, and theory/modeling/simulation and access is provided at no cost to users for research that is in the public domain and intended for publication in the open literature. The CNMS accepts Rapid Access user proposals for expedited peer review that request support for time-sensitive studies.

Projects typically last no more than 5 days.

Clifford G. Shull Fellowship ProgramContinuousThe program is aimed at attracting outstanding early career researchers to continue on a path of scientific excellence while substantially contributing to ORNL and U.S Department of Energy missions and goals. The Shull Fellowship is open to all fields of science and engineering that utilize neutron techniques and/or advance neutron science including the physical, chemical, materials, biological, and medical sciences.

The Nuclear Engineering Science Laboratory Synthesis (NESLS) program at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) provides nuclear engineering research opportunities and associated activities for current undergraduate and graduate students.

Appointment duration is flexible with a suggested minimum of 10 weeks in summer with poster session required.

Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) ProgramOffice of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) ProgramNovember 2021 (Solicitation 2)"This program prepares graduate students for STEM careers critically important to the DOE Office of Science mission, by providing graduate thesis research opportunities at DOE laboratories.

Projects must begin 11/1/2020 and 2/28/2021 and be 3-12 consecutive months in duration.

Project period is flexible (full- and part-time offered).

Advanced Short-Term Research Opportunity (ASTRO)ContinuousASTRO participants conduct research in areas that support ORNL missions in the basic and applied sciences, energy, and environment.

Projects start dates are flexible and must be 3-12 consecutive months in duration (possibility of extension to 24 months).

Computational Science & Technology Advanced Research Studies (C-STARS)ContinuousC-STARS participants conduct research on nationally visible advanced computing projects in the areas of National Security, Climate Science, Urban Dynamics, Health Data Analytics, Astrophysics, Energy, Chemistry or Biology.

Project periods are based on academic schedules and must be at least 3 months in duration.

ORNL Post-Master’s Research Associate ProgramContinuousThe emphasis on a research mentoring approach allows program appointees to become integral members of ORNL research and development teams. They gain exposure to current national issues in science and technology, have opportunities to share and exchange innovative ideas and techniques, and make significant contributions to ORNL programs.

The Post-Master's Research Associate Program currently has multiple open positions. Please review the list at the bottom of the program page for application links.

ORNL Laboratory Technology Associate (Lab Tech) ProgramContinuousOffers current undergraduate students or recent bachelor’s or associate degree graduates an opportunity to develop their technical skills at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Opportunities are driven by ORNL needs and include both full-time and part-time opportunities. The program is designed to complement academic programs and prepare individuals for a career in the technical workforce.

Flexible project period with possibility of permanent employment

ORNL Post-Bachelor’s Research Associate ProgramContinuousThe emphasis on a research mentoring approach allows program appointees to become integral members of ORNL research and development teams. They gain exposure to current national issues in science and technology, have opportunities to share and exchange innovative ideas and techniques, and make significant contributions to ORNL programs. The interaction of ideas, skills, approaches, and technologies is of mutual benefit to the participant and ORNL.

Successful applicants are considered full-time temporary employees of ORAU entitled to employee benefits.
