Streaming v. Downloading

When working on video projects, one of the most important thing to keep in mind is how you are going to present the video.  There are plenty of different ways to show your video to the world, from burning a DVD to uploading on Youtube, as well as several Duke-managed streaming options.

DukeStream is an OIT-hosted streaming media service which allows members of the Duke community to distribute media files via dedicated streaming servers. We currently offer two tracks for this service:  DukeStream Personal, which supports QuickTime and QuickTime-compatible files, and DukeStream Pro, which supports QuickTime, Flash, RealMedia and WindowsMedia files.  For more information, visit the DukeStream page on the OIT site.

For reference, below is a flow chart that will help you decide how and where to host your video files, whether it’s on a Duke streaming service, a public streaming service, or just available for download.  Click for hi-res PDF version.
