Reason.

After weeks of contemplation over how I should share with you my DukeEngage independent project, I find blogging the best option to record my eight-week experience in San Francisco. Yes, I decided to do a domestic independent project, which is something I totally did not expect. More on that later…

The organization that I am in partnership with is called One Heart World-Wide (OHWW), a 501(c)3 organization based in San Francisco dedicated to improving maternal and neonatal outcomes in some of the most remote areas in the world. Its program area has extended its boundaries from Tibet to the mountainous villages within the Himalayas of Nepal, and all the way to the Tarahumara population hidden away in the Copper Canyon of Mexico. Although I wasn’t able to travel across the oceans to a completely foreign country and see for myself the impact OHWW has on the communities, working in the city of SF has definitely been an eye-opening experience.

The concept of this blog stems from the name of my partner organization. “One Heart” has eight letters; my summer project is exactly eight weeks. Thus, each letter will be representing a week that I am here in this wondrous city, and I will definitely try my best to summarize the week with one word…or perhaps two.
